Overview Of Plastic Wraps By Austyn Kale at 2012-09-11 05:19:32

Plastic wraps are used for sealing containers that have food in them. A plastic wrap is also referred to as a cling film, food wrap or cling wrap. The name differs with the location. It is a thin film made of plastic. The film helps keep food fresh for longer periods of time. Plastic wraps are packaged in boxes that have cutting edges and come in rolls. They cling to surfaces especially the smooth ones and remain very tight securely sealing container openings. They do not need other devices like adhesives.
The regular wrap is 0.5 mils, that measure up to 12.5 microns in thickness. Initially, Plastic wraps were made by using PVC. Over the years, non PVC plastic wraps have been developed and circulated into the market. There was a need for alternative materials because of serious risks in transferring plasticizers into food from the PVC wraps. The most affected foods as per the research were cheese, meat and fatty fish.
PVC wraps have however remained popular. Their major application is in catering. For the home needs, most people prefer LDPE. It is said to be a much safer option compared to PVC.
PVC is also not environmentally friendly and may cause adverse effects. This is because of the toxicity of the material. It is also very hard to recycle the material and thus it may be used once and then disposed off. Its excellent stretching properties have kept it in the market and made it popular.
The stretching feature of PVC attracts the catering industry. The food looks well presented when this material is used. It is also able to cling to all types of surfaces thereby making it universal in its own sense as a wrapping material.
Many countries in the world have raised concerns over PVC with most banning its use especially in toys and also food preservation.
The safer brands are made from polyvinyldene chloride, abbreviated as PVDC. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is preferred over PVC. LDPE does not quite cling as PVC does but it is less risky as toxic additives are much lower. LDPE may be designed to cling better by adding linear low density polyethylene (LLPDE). This is quickly bridging the gap between PVC and the rest of the brands.
Other brands have dimples so as to keep food away from the adhesive. These wraps are not sticky but on pushing the dimples, the adhesive comes into contact with the surface. It is therefore good to check on the type of wrap one is using so as to stay safe.
